Taking on science subject leadership in a primary school is one of those roles that sounds straightforward until you actually sit down and work out what it involves. The job description tends to be vague. The handover is often minimal. And the expectation that you will somehow know what to do next arrives almost immediately.

What does a primary science subject leader actually do?
At its most basic, the role has four main areas of responsibility: curriculum, staff, evidence, and accountability.
Curriculum means ensuring that what is taught across the school is coherent, well-sequenced, and covers the national curriculum programmes of study from EYFS to Year 6. It includes making sure that working scientifically is genuinely embedded, not just listed on a planning document, and that pupils build on prior knowledge rather than repeating topics without clear progression.
Staff responsibility means understanding the confidence levels of your colleagues and putting appropriate support in place. Most primary teachers are not science specialists. Subject knowledge gaps, uncertainty about planning practical work, and limited experience of different types of scientific enquiry are all common. Identifying these and responding to them, through CPD, paired planning, or subject leader modelling, is a central part of the role.
Evidence means monitoring what is actually happening in classrooms and gathering the information you need to make good decisions. Book scrutiny, lesson observation, planning reviews, and pupil voice all contribute. The goal is not to catch anyone out but to build an honest picture of where science is strong and where it needs attention.
Accountability means communicating that picture to senior leadership and governors, making the case for the resources and time science needs, and demonstrating that you are leading the subject with purpose.
Where to start in your first term
The temptation when starting any new role is to try to tackle everything at once. With science subject leadership, that tends to lead to a lot of half-finished work and not much impact.
A more useful approach is to begin with an honest audit. Before you can plan anything, you need to know where you are starting from. What is the curriculum coverage like? Where are the gaps? How confident are staff? What resources do you have and what condition are they in? What has previous monitoring shown?
A structured self-evaluation, working through each area of the role systematically, takes time but gives you something concrete to work from. It also generates the evidence base for your first governor report, which tends to arrive sooner than you expect.
From the audit, you can identify two or three genuine priorities rather than a long list of everything that could be better. Those priorities drive your action plan, your CPD decisions, and your conversations with senior leadership about support and resources.

What good science subject leadership looks like in practice
Ofsted and the wider school improvement literature are reasonably consistent about what effective subject leadership involves. Inspectors want to see a subject leader who knows their subject well, understands what is happening in classrooms, can articulate the intent behind the curriculum and how it is implemented, and can demonstrate impact on pupils’ knowledge and understanding.
In practice, this means having documentation that reflects genuine thinking rather than a compliance exercise, monitoring activity that happens regularly and leads to action, CPD that addresses real needs rather than ticking a box, and governor reports that give a clear and honest account of the current position.
It also means being connected to the wider primary science community. Organisations such as STEM Learning, the Primary Science Teaching Trust, the Ogden Trust, and the ASE all offer resources, networks, and professional development that most subject leaders find genuinely useful. PSQM, the Primary Science Quality Mark, provides a structured framework for developing science across the school and is worth looking into if you want external recognition for the work you are doing.
