I wrote a few weeks back about how ChatGPT was now able to browse the Internet. But apparently only a week after they rolled that feature out, OpenAI deactivated it again. It turned out it was being used by some users to get around paywalled content.
This was a shame as it was pretty handy to have ChatGPT being able to access live, current information rather than have it limited to a certain date.
So for those asking “does chatgpt have access to the internet” or “can chatgpt access the internet?” the answer is YES. But you need to do this workaround, which involves using a free plugin for the Chrome browser called WebChatGPT. This free extension adds relevant web results to your prompts to ChatGPT.

To install the plugin,
- Head here and click add to Chrome.
- Go to ChatGPT as normal and sign in.
- You will now see a slider at the bottom of your ChatGPT page. Slide it across to the right to activate web access.
Have a play with the plugin and see what you think. From what i can see it seems to work fine. It will plug the gap until OpenAI restores the internet access to ChatGPT at some point in the future once they’ve worked their way through the issues.
